Knitting & crochet calculator

Sweater Calculator

Estimate sweater body stitch counts, front/back panel counts, body rows, armhole rows, and sleeve opening stitches from measurements and gauge.

This is a sweater planning calculator, not a full pattern generator. It gives the core stitch and row numbers that help you sanity-check a simple drop-shoulder or basic body plan before drafting details like neckline, shoulders, ribbing, and sleeve shaping.

The calculator adds ease to the chest measurement, multiplies the finished chest by stitch gauge, and splits the body into front and back counts. It also converts body length and armhole depth into row counts using your row gauge.

Worked example: a 40-inch chest with 4 inches of ease gives a 44-inch finished chest. At 20 stitches per 4 inches, the body needs about 220 stitches in the round, or about 110 stitches each for front and back panels.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can this generate a complete sweater pattern?

No. It gives planning numbers for body and armhole math. A full sweater pattern also needs neckline shaping, shoulder construction, sleeve shaping, edging, stitch pattern decisions, and finishing details.

What ease should I use for a sweater?

Use negative ease for fitted stretch garments, 0-2 inches for close fit, 2-4 inches for standard fit, and more for relaxed or oversized sweaters. Fiber and stitch pattern matter.

Why does the calculator split front and back stitches?

Many sweater constructions divide the body at the armholes. The front/back split helps you plan flat panels, armhole separation, or stitch holders.

How should I use the sleeve opening estimate?

Treat it as a starting estimate for a drop-shoulder or simple armhole opening. Compare it with your desired sleeve circumference and adjust before knitting.
