The most reliable way to estimate what's left is to weigh the remaining yarn, since yardage and weight scale together for a consistent yarn.
This calculator compares your partial skein's current weight to the full skein's original weight, then applies that same ratio to the full skein's yardage to estimate how much length remains. All you need is a kitchen or postal scale.
Worked example: a 100g/220yd skein that now weighs 50g has roughly 110 yards remaining - 50% of the original weight and yardage.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need to remove the label or ball band to weigh yarn accurately?
Yes, weigh just the yarn itself. Ball bands and paper labels have their own weight that will throw off the estimate.
Does this work if I don't know the original full skein weight?
You need the full skein's original weight and yardage from the label (or a matching skein from the same dye lot) as a reference point - the calculation is a direct ratio against those two numbers.
Is this estimate exact enough to plan a second project?

What if my yarn has been wound into a cake or ball and I don't know the original yardage?
