Sweaters carry the widest yardage range of any common project, because chest size, ease, sleeve length, and yarn weight all move the number independently. A published pattern's stated yardage is the most reliable figure when one exists. When you're estimating from scratch, or substituting yarn, the math from finished measurements gets you close.

Typical ranges by size and weight

A medium adult pullover (roughly 40in finished chest) in worsted weight generally runs 1,100-1,400 yards. The same size in DK weight runs closer to 1,400-1,800 yards, since the thinner yarn needs more length to cover the same area. A bulky-weight version of the same sweater can drop to 700-900 yards. Larger sizes and longer sleeves or body length push all of these ranges up proportionally with the increase in surface area.

Worked example

Start from your finished chest measurement, using the ease guidance in how sweater ease and sizing math works to land on a target circumference. Estimate total surface area by treating the sweater as roughly two rectangles for the body front and back, plus two tapered rectangles for the sleeves, then run that combined area through the yarn yardage calculator at your chosen weight and stitch pattern. Cardigans versus pullovers

A cardigan uses slightly less body yardage than a comparable pullover of the same size, since it's worked flat and open rather than in the round, though button bands and any collar or edging add some of that difference back. Treat a cardigan's yardage estimate as roughly in line with a pullover's rather than assuming a large savings from the open front.

Buying strategy for a sweater-sized project

Because sweaters use enough yardage that running short mid-project is a real risk, especially with hand-dyed or limited-batch yarn, buying one extra skein beyond the calculated estimate is standard practice for anything at this scale, and checking that all skeins share a dye lot before starting is worth the extra minute at checkout.
