To determine your total starting border stitch count before working round 1:
- Top & Bottom Edges: Count the active cast-on and bind-off stitches (1 stitch per column).
- Raw Side Edges: Stitches are wider than rows are tall. Do not pick up 1 stitch in every row or the border will ripple into lettuce ruffles:
- For Knitting (Stockinette/Garter): Pick up 3 stitches for every 4 rows (a 0.75 pick-up ratio).
- For Crochet (Single Crochet): Work 1 single crochet per row end.
- For Crochet (Double Crochet): Work 2 single crochet stitches around the post of each row end.
- Corner Multiplier: At each of the four 90-degree corners, add 2 to 3 stitches (or work
ch 2) to allow the border to pivot flat. Without corner increases, the border will cup inward like a shower cap.
