Pattern Anatomy & Construction Overview

This tote bag is engineered from the ground up to solve the most frustrating flaw of handmade bags: drooping under weight. Built with dense 100% mercerized cotton, a structured oval base, and non-stretch thermal handles, it holds its crisp rectangular silhouette whether carrying a laptop, library books, or fresh farmers market produce.

Section 1: The Oval Base (+6 Stitches per Round)

With Color A and a 4.5 mm hook, ch 21.

Round 1: Work 1 sc in 2nd ch from hook and next 18 ch across; work 3 sc into the last chain to pivot around the tip. Working along the opposite underside of the foundation chain: work 1 sc in each of next 18 ch; work 2 sc in the very first chain space. Place marker in the first stitch. (42 sts)

Round 2: Work 1 inc in first st, 18 sc, work 3 inc around curved end, 18 sc, work 2 inc around starting end. (48 sts)

Round 3: 1 sc, 1 inc, 18 sc, [1 sc, 1 inc] 3 times around curve, 18 sc, [1 sc, 1 inc] 2 times. (54 sts)

Round 4: 2 sc, 1 inc, 18 sc, [2 sc, 1 inc] 3 times around curve, 18 sc, [2 sc, 1 inc] 2 times. (60 sts)

Round 5: 3 sc, 1 inc, 18 sc, [3 sc, 1 inc] 3 times around curve, 18 sc, [3 sc, 1 inc] 2 times. (66 sts)

Round 6: 4 sc, 1 inc, 18 sc, [4 sc, 1 inc] 3 times around curve, 18 sc, [4 sc, 1 inc] 2 times. (72 sts)

Base should measure approximately 10 inches long by 3.5 inches wide. If your base curls or ruffles, review our Tote Bag Sizing & Oval Base Guide.

Section 2: Body Transition & Lower Wall

Round 7 (Base Ridge Round): Work 1 sc in the Back Loop Only (BLO) of every stitch around. (72 sts). Working in the back loop creates a crisp perpendicular fold that allows the bag walls to stand upright.

Rounds 8–14 (7 rounds): Working through both loops normally, work 1 sc in each stitch around with Color A. (72 sts)

Section 3: Centered Cat Tapestry Motif

At the end of Round 14, introduce Color B (Charcoal) on the final pull-through. Carry Color B inside your stitches across the solid rounds so tension remains consistent.

The 72-stitch circumference splits into 36 front stitches and 36 back stitches. The sleeping cat colorwork chart is 28 stitches wide by 24 rounds tall. Centering formula: (36 - 28) / 2 = 4 stitches on each side of the front panel:

  • Front Panel (36 sts): 4 sts Color A • 28 sts Cat Chart • 4 sts Color A
  • Back Panel (36 sts): 36 sts solid Color A

Rounds 15–38 (24 rounds): Work according to chart. Maintain relaxed tension on your carried strand so the fabric does not pucker. Cut Color B after Round 38, leaving a 6-inch tail to weave.

Section 4: Upper Wall & Reinforced Rim

Rounds 39–46 (8 rounds): With Color A, work 1 sc in each st around. (72 sts)

Rounds 47–48 (2 rounds): Work 1 tight slip stitch in each st around. This double slip stitch rim creates a firm, non-curling collar that supports the handle load without stretching. Fasten off and weave in all ends.

Section 5: Zero-Stretch Thermal Crochet Handles

Make 2 identical straps using Color A:

  1. Row 1: Ch 7. Starting in 2nd ch from hook, work 1 sc in each ch across. Turn. (6 sts)
  2. Row 2: Ch 1, insert hook into the back loop of current stitch AND the unworked front loop from the foundation chain directly below it. Yarn over and pull up a loop, yo and pull through both loops. Repeat across all 6 sts. Turn. (6 thermal sc)
  3. Rows 3–70: Ch 1. Insert hook through the back loop of the current row AND the open parallel loop of the row below. Work thermal sc across all 6 sts. Turn.

Work until strap measures 18 inches unstretched (approx. 70 rows). Fasten off, leaving an 18-inch yarn tail for seaming.

Section 6: Reinforced Box-X Handle Anchoring

Never sew straps directly to the bag's top rim edge. Fasten each handle end 2 inches below the rim on the interior of the bag:

  1. Position the front handle ends 3 inches in from each side seam, with 2 inches of the handle tail overlapping the inside wall.
  2. Using your tapestry needle and the long yarn tail, stitch a 1.5-inch square box through both fabric thicknesses.
  3. Stitch an 'X' diagonally across the inside of the square box. This spreads tensile stress across dozens of cotton loops, ensuring handles carry 15+ lbs without tearing or stretching.
  4. Repeat for the back handle. Weave in all remaining tails securely.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why use 100% mercerized cotton instead of acrylic for this bag?

Mercerized cotton has unmatched tensile strength and does not stretch out of shape when carrying heavy items. Acrylic yarn relaxes and elongates permanently under weight, causing bags and straps to droop.

What is Thermal Single Crochet and why is it used for the straps?

Thermal single crochet is worked into the back loop of the active row and the parallel loop of the previous row simultaneously. This forms an interlocking double-thick webbing that limits handle stretch to under 8% under a 10 lb load.

How do you prevent the tapestry cat colorwork from showing through on the wrong side?

Tapestry crochet naturally carries the unworked yarn inside the stitches. To keep color 'ghosting' minimal, maintain light, even tension on your carried strand and ensure your background and motif colors have strong contrast.

Can I make this tote bag larger or smaller?

Yes. To make it wider, lengthen the starting chain by multiples of 2 (each added chain adds 2 total body stitches). To make it taller, add rounds of solid Color A before or after the 24-round cat motif section.
